The University of Kelaniya was established in the year 1978, in the city of Kelaniya. It is a public university with an academic staff of 771 and non academic staff of 637 personnel. The university comprises of the two campuses which houses six faculties and four institutions.

Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute, Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology and Postgraduate Institute of Pali & Buddhist Studies.

Faculties and Departments:
Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies includes Department of Accountancy (DoA), Department of Commerce and Financial Management (DCFM), Department of Human Resource Management (HRM), Department of Marketing Management (DMM) and Department of Finance (DFin). Faculty of Humanities includes departments of English, Fine Arts, Hindi, Linguistics, Modern Language, Pali & Buddhist Studies, Sanskrit, Sinhala and Western Classical Culture & Christian Culture. Faculty of Medicine includes departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry and Clinical Chemistry, Disability Studies, Family Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Medicine, Medical Microbiology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Public Health, Parasitology, Physiology and Surgery. Faculty of Science includes the departments of Botany, Chemistry, Industrial Management, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics, Zoology and Statistics & Computer Science. Faculty of Social Sciences includes the departments of Archeology, Economics, Geography, History, Library and Information Sciences, Mass Communication, Philosophy, Sociology and Sport & Recreation Management.
