The National Institute of Education (NIE) is one of the leading institutes in the country in the field of General Education. It was established in 1986. The purpose of creating the NIE was to establish an institute responsible for capacity building of educational managers and teachers, designing and developing school curricula and text books and conducting educational policy. Some of its main objectives include advising the minister regarding the development of Education in Sri Lanka, provide graduate and undergraduate studies in the field of education, provide specialist services in the field of Education and carry out education development programs.

Programs and Courses

The Institute is offering various programs in the following departments: Administration, Aesthetics, Business Studies, Education Administration, Electronic Dissemination, Engineering Services, English, Finance, Inclusive Education, Information Technology, Institutional Development, Library and Publications, Mathematics, Open School, Planning and Evaluation, Primary Education, Religion, Research and Development, School Management Science, Health & Physical Education, Sinhala, Social Sciences, Tamil, Teacher Empowerment and Technical Education.

Admission Procedure 2024 - 2025

To be eligible for admission in the Institute, the candidates must possess: A Postgraduate Diploma in Education with a merit or a distinction pass or a minimum of 5 'B' passes. A Bachelor of Education Degree with a first or a second class or a minimum of 5 'B' passes in the professional component.
